First
Try
The first selected new location for Kite Koop was at
Barnacle Bills. It was in this older
“Teaguer” building that every new project revealed new underlying
issues that
had to be addressed and ultimately, some of these as well as other
issues
resulted in a move to the present location.
The weather started out wet but manageable and
quickly went
to frigid and a jet heater had to be rented and later one purchased.
This
brought about new issues with fumes and the owner living over the space
to be
renovated.
There was also the issue of inventory and
furnishings from
the previous business that were supposed to be moved, but we ended up
moving
(time away from renovation).
…And the issue of handy-work there that took time away from
the construction/renovation
There were sagging floors (supported by rotten sill
plates
and sinking or leaning cinder block supports. Along with replacing the
rotten wood, the floor had to be jacked up by
working in a 3-foot muddy crawl space using two 60+ pound construction
jacks.
Holes for footings had to be hand dug in the mud and debris of previous
“construction/renovations”. Block was
used just to hold the jacks and then more holes had to be dug to hold
the block
that was used to hold the concrete pedestal support for the treated 4X4
supports that were attached to treated 4X4 to hold up /reinforce the
existing
floor joists. Floorboards damaged beyond reconditioning were removed
and to cut
costs, plywood was used instead.
The south wall leaked and once the pegboard and
under wall
was removed rot was discovered around a window that had been covered.
The ceiling sagged and had to be repaired and tiles
replaced
where necessary…
The most distasteful parts of the renovation were
completed and prior to beginning work on the sizable amount that
remained, I
took time off to get away for a week. During this time away, I was
notified
that due to unforeseen difficulties, this location was not going to
work out
and a new site had been selected.
